Green hydrogen is considered one of the key technologies for the transformation of energy-intensive industries. At the heart of the NEFI Technology Talk, hosted by NEFI consortium partner OÖ Energiesparverband on June 17th, 2025 in Linz, was the question of the technical and economic conditions under which manufacturing companies can use hydrogen today and in the future.

Impulses and Perspectives on the Energy Transition

The event began with an overview by Gerhard Dell, Energy Commissioner of Upper Austria and Managing Director of the OÖ Energiesparverband. He outlined the current status and future prospects of the industrial energy transition in Upper Austria.

Alexander Kirchner, CTO of Energie AG, presented the Hydrogen Starter Grid and emphasised the role of hydrogen as a potential gamechanger for the energy system of the future.

Technological Insights and Areas of Application

Stephan Abermann from AIT provided in-depth insights into the technical foundations and industrial applications of hydrogen. His presentation focused on practical future scenarios and potential use cases for businesses.

Elvira Lutter, Managing Director of WIVA P&G, introduced the Hydrogen Industrial Inland Valley Austria, along with current initiatives and planned projects aimed at strengthening Austria’s position as a hydrogen hub.

Industrial Projects and Practical Examples

The international technology group Andritz showcased its activities in constructing hydrogen production facilities. Irmela Kofler from the metallurgical competence centre K1-MET explained how hydrogen can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions in steel production.

The programme concluded with two exciting practical examples: the NEFI project H2Factory at INNIO in Tyrol and the Linz-based Green Ammonia project by LAT Nitrogen.

Exchange and Networking

Around 60 participants attended the Technology Talk. The event offered numerous opportunities for professional exchange. The audience posed targeted questions on the presentations and engaged in discussion with the experts.

The afternoon concluded with many new impulses and valuable conversations over a shared snack – true to the NEFI motto: Innovation meets Industry.

We thank all speakers and participants for their dedicated contributions and look forward to further exchange on implementing innovative solutions for the industrial energy transition.
