DekarPIO
Target group: Pulp & paper

Built on a mathematical optimization model, DekarPIO calculates site-specific transformation pathways for different types of factories in the pulp and paper industry. The tool supports the identification of economically feasible technology options, helping companies plan and implement sustainable production strategies.

In addition, a sector handbook summarising technological options and practical recommendations is available.

This tool offers many advantages:

  • Web tool for site-specific pathways — computes optimal transformation roadmaps for pure paper mills, integrated pulp and paper plants and standalone pulp mills
  • Mathematical optimisation — balances site conditions, energy prices and available technologies to identify cost-optimal measures.
  • Technology evaluation — techno-economically assesses measures such as high-temperature heat pumps, residual-fuel boilers, biomass and other renewables for process heat and steam
  • Clear business case insights — shows expected CO₂ reductions alongside energy cost impacts and payback estimates

Our service

  • Step 1 — Baseline & data input
We collect plant-specific data (energy and steam demand, process constraints, fuel mixes and site infrastructure) to create an accurate model input.
  • Step 2 — Scenario modelling
We use the web tool to model optimization scenarios, evaluating different combinations of technologies and operational changes, and generate various options ranked by cost and CO₂ impact.
  • Step 3 — Results & action plan
We provide a decision support package, including scenario comparisons, recommended investment priorities, projected emissions reductions, and an implementation roadmap.
