High-temperature heat pumps (HTHPs) offer considerable potential for industrial decarbonisation; however, to date they have not been practically demonstrated at the megawatt scale above 150 °C. There remains a lack of modular, efficient, and reliable solutions for complex industrial applications.

Within the HIPI project, INNIO and AIT, in close collaboration with HEATEN, are developing piston-compressor-based HTHPs. Their development, testing, and integration are being carried out in Jenbach, complemented by digital control systems, a digital twin, and demonstration within a real energy system.
The successful demonstration of the developed HTHPs will enable the INNIO Group to manufacture modularly configurable HTHPs in the megawatt performance range. AIT, as the scientific partner, will strengthen its position in research and development in the field of energy systems. Collaboration with the NEFI Innovation Lab will broaden the scope of monitoring and support the dissemination of the results. The INNIO Group and HEATEN aim to develop larger-scale energy solutions. In addition, the strengths of both companies in engineering, technology, digitalisation, and green fuels are to be leveraged in order to advance CO₂-free power and heat generation.
