NEFI Technology Talk: From Idea to Impact – Industrial Symbiosis in Austria

The transformation of industry towards climate neutrality and resource efficiency requires new forms of collaboration. Industrial symbiosis promotes cooperation between different industrial enterprises with the aim of increasing efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. Central elements include the use of waste heat, waste materials, or by-products from one industrial facility to supply other plants with energy and raw materials. This reduces the demand for new, often CO₂-intensive raw materials while simultaneously and significantly lowering direct and indirect CO₂ emissions from production and transport.

At the NEFI Technology Talk on Industrial Symbiosis, the focus is on concrete implementation examples and current developments. Through three best-practice presentations, participants will gain insights into successful applications of industrial symbiosis at different levels:

• Hubs for Circularity – implementation of industrial symbiosis initiatives in the EU
• Industrial symbiosis from the perspective of IEA Research Cooperation and EU projects
• Intermunicipal district heating networks and energy communities WEIZplus

The aim of the event is to provide a well-grounded overview of the state of the art, international perspectives, and practice-oriented regional solutions, thereby making current developments tangible and accessible.

The Technology Talk offers participants the opportunity to learn about the latest trends and best practices, contribute their own ideas, and further develop existing project approaches. Exchange with experts from industry, research, and public institutions opens up new perspectives, fosters collaboration, and supports the joint development of innovative solutions for industrial symbiosis.
