NEFI - New Energy for Industry developed scenarios for climate neutrality in industry

The domestic manufacturing industry emitted about 28 million tonnes of CO₂e into the atmosphere in 2021 and is thus responsible for more than one third of the total emissions in Austria. In their current study, the experts of the NEFI innovation network have developed three scenarios that provide important impulses for a climate-neutral future of Austrian industry.

NEFI Power Women for the Decarbonisation of Industry

Despite numerous efforts to promote and address the issue, the proportion of women in technical professions remains low. On the International Women’s Day, the NEFI Innovation Network will bring successful female technicians to the stage. They are NEFI project managers or are pushing the decarbonisation of industry with their know-how and expertise.

Steam without gas

On January 25th, 2023, the new NEFI project AHEAD (Advanced Heat Pump Demonstrator) was presented in Vienna. in collaboration with the biopharmaceutical company Takeda, the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK), the Climate and Energy Fund, and the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology.

Under the leadership of the AIT Center for Energy, a steam-generating heat pump is being integrated for the first time in an industrial operation. The aim of this natural gas-free steam generation is to achieve a CO₂ reduction of up to 90 percent at one of Takeda's largest pharmaceutical production sites in Vienna, using only natural refrigerants.

SANBA – Smart Anergy Quarter Baden: Project Achievements

The completed SANBA project shows that a so-called anergy or low-temperature heating/cooling network can also be used for heritage-listed buildings as an innovative solution for the local coverage of heating and cooling needs.

Clean Energy for Tourism: Management and Optimisation of Electricity Consumption in Ski Resorts

The final consortium meeting of the NEFI project Clean Energy for Tourism took place from 19-20 September 2022. In this project, Salzburg ski resorts, as well as technology and research partners such as the AIT, BEST, Faradis, World Direct, Sattler Energie Consulting and the Montanuniversität Leoben, led by Salzburg AG, investigated opportunities for applying energy system flexibility, CO₂ mitigation options - as well as energy savings, in addition to the increasing the amount of integration of local renewable energy generation in ski resorts.

On the 13th/14th of October 2022, the second international scientific conference of the NEFI Innovation Network took place in Linz. The focus was on the importance of research and innovation as well as the necessary framework on the path to a climate-neutral industry.

Since the beginning of the year, the energy crisis has brought this challenge into the public sphere. Five keynotes highlighted the possibilities of how heating and cooling networks can be decarbonised with the help of geothermal energy and industrial waste heat at this NEFI Talk .

Electricity grid security: Survey on the contribution of industry. Incentives and potentials for the provision of flexibility

Industrial companies will have the opportunity to make a major contribution to grid stability in Austria as active participants in the energy system. Flexibilities can be used to economically utilise both surplus and shortfall production of electricity. How this should be designed in the future is being worked out by the consortium of Industry4Redispatch. In particular, the view of the needs and requirements of industrial companies are essential to develop a functioning system and to create incentives for industrial companies.
